Day #:34 Personas, the foundation of a great user experience (part 1)

What is a persona

The below was so well explained the article that I read, I wanted to include it in the actual wording. So please see the quote below

“A persona represents a cluster of users who exhibit similar behavioral patterns in their purchasing decisions, use of technology or products, customer service preferences, lifestyle choices, and the like. Behaviors, attitudes, and motivations are common to a “type” regardless of age, gender, education, and other typical demographics. In fact, personas vastly span demographics.”

This makes for an interesting statement because often people are so consumed with demographics, I think at some point I would like to do an explanation of demographics as well and compare the two and look at differences

How are personas built?

  • Personas are built from conducting interviews with participants
  • Participants from 5 – 30 is a good amount (dependant on resources)
  • Once interviews are conducted, data will be collected and similarities will be noticed
  • These similarities form the baseline of the persona
  • A tip for the interview is to start with general conversation and get a feel for the persons goals, beliefs and lifestyle before zoning in on the content you require answers for
  • Analysis is then conducted on the research compiled ranging from 1 – 2 weeks
  • Extremes and patterns are identified and as said above groupings of similar behaviour is identified and then assessed
  • There after a second round of testing can occur and this is where interviewees are picked based on falling within the behaviour and motivation surrounding user types (these are not technically personas just yet)
  • 5 – 7 participants are estimated for this round of research.
  • This second round of research fills in any gaps you may, and validates the persona

This article is nice and long, so I will be doing a second post on this tomorrow. Enjoy until then fellow Uxers!

Bye for now!
