Day #22: How creating Design Systems help solve problems every designer and developer face when scaling up.

The article talks about how lack of design consistency influences so many aspects of the business, see below for direct quotes regarding the effects of lack of consistency

  • User confusion: Different patterns responsible for the same action confuse users.
  • Slow design process: The lack of reusable design assets slows down designers (everything is created from scratch).
  • Slow development: The low number of fully reusable components bogs down development.
  • Difficult onboarding: Introducing new designers and developers to an undocumented “system” is terribly difficult.”

Something that the article mentions is consistency across the board of the company, I noticed at another company that I worked for that processes were very different from team to team and not monitored with the same ideals. This happens in my opinion when management are not communicating and or don’t have the same ideals of the business in mind. Something else the article mentions is the concept of forethought in design and development. Now this is something I am mostly experiencing working on the start-up I mentioned. We must consider what it would like in all types of different scenarios and I often hear the developer planning for such occurrences that seem so far in the future for me. This is so vital in retrospect because then if…WHEN we do scale up it won’t be earth shattering for our functionality and back end team

Anyway, an interesting read and recommended if you want a bit of insight into design systems and scaling up,

Bye for now!
